Miles' late push for a SIAC volleyball postseason spot got off to a tough start as the Lady Bears were swept (25-15, 26-16, 25-13) by Spring Hill on Thursday night at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. With three conference matches remaining, the Lady Bears (4-19, 4-12 SIAC West) remain two games out of the fourth and final position in the West Division.
Battling against Spring Hill (19-7, 17-0) is a tall task for any program, as the Badgers have now won 160 consecutive regular-season conference matches and are 179-1 since beginning to play a SIAC schedule in 2014. Miles had a few moments early before succumbing to the Badgers, who hit .402 as a team.
The Lady Bears trailed 9-4 in the opening set before rallying for five consecutive points to tie the match.
Kayla Trawick and
Kandace Griffin each had kills before Trawick rifled two straight service aces to help Miles back into the game. The Lady Bears trailed just 18-14 before Spring Hill rattled off six straight points to take control of the opening set.
The second set saw the Badgers score the first six points and take a commanding 17-3 lead but Miles showed some fight. Spring Hll committed six errors (five attack, one serve) but Miles got two more aces from Trawick and one from
Jadyn McGhee, who added a kill as part of an 8-2 run. Still, it was not enough to keep SHC from taking the second set. Miles held its only lead at the start of the third set and was down just 9-5. But Spring Hill continued to fire from all sides and angles and closed out its 18th consecutive victory, where it has yet to drop a set.
Trawick (five kills, four aces, six digs) and Griffin (five kills) were the top hitters for Miles, who also received worthwhile efforts from
Zion Williams (three kills, four blocks, five digs),
Trinidy Gaines (four blocks),
Kayla Hill (10 assists) and
Aaliyah Sanders (six digs). The Lady Bears are back in action on Saturday when they host Tuskegee. First serve is set for 9 a.m.
