Miles forward
Imani Williams plays a major role in the success of the team that often does not show up in the scoring column. But on Monday night, the final stat sheet showed that her best offensive effort of the season came at the right time.
Williams scored a season-high 16 points and added 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the year and each of those points was necessary as No. 20 Miles fought off a strong effort from underdog Spring Hill to take a 64-58 victory at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. It was the 16th straight win overall for the Lady Bears (16-1, 12-0 SIAC West) and the 15th consecutive win at home. Still, for a game that Miles trailed for less than 15 seconds and led by as many as 13 points, it was not cake walk against the Badgers (4-12, 4-8).
Spring Hill trailed by just three points entering the second quarter but used a 10-2 run to grab the lead. Emyria Harris knocked down two 3-pointers and Claudia Garrido later hit a jumper that gave the Badgers a 24-22 lead with less than four minutes remaining before halftime. But Miles closed the period with a flourish, outscoring the Badgers 11-4. Williams contributed three buckets, including the final two of the quarter that sent the Lady Bears into the break with a 33-28 advantage.
A 10-0 run early in the third quarter gave the Lady Bears some breathing room. Williams started the run with a basket,
Madison Lee (16 points, eight rebounds, three steals) added a 3-ball, and
Iemyiah Harris scored the final five points to give Miles its biggest lead, 45-32, with seven minutes left in the quarter. Spring Hill would continue to battle, but the Lady Bears seemed to find the answer each time.
The Badgers cut the deficit to five points going into the fourth quarter. But the Lady Bears scored six straight to start the period, the last four coming from Williams. She took a feed from Harris and finished on the break for 56-45 advantage with 6:40 to go. Spring Hill made one more run, pulling to within four points with 70 seconds remaining. But a steal and score from Williams with 31 seconds left finished the job and extended Miles' current win streaks.
Marta Duda (15 points, six rebounds) was the only player in double figures scoring for Spring Hill. Harris (14 points, eight assists, five rebounds, three steals, two blocks) filled the stat sheet and
Tederia Ashley (six points, eight rebounds) was solid in the paint for Miles, which travels to Tuskegee on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
