Miles dials long distance in win over Lane

Forward Mykayle Carter scored a career-high 25 points and led a 3-point barrage on Saturday for the Golden Bears, who made a season-high 14 from long distance in an 80-60 win over Lane at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. It was the fourth straight win for Miles (10-3, 9-2 SIAC West), which has beaten the Dragons (5-7, 4-5) eight straight times overall and nine consecutive times at home.

The Golden Bears led wire-to-wire and got right to work from deep. Carter splashed down from three on Miles' first possession and Elijah Horton followed with his own 3-ball on the next trip down the floor for a quick 6-0 advantage. Carter made his second 3-pointer two minutes later and the Golden Bears had already taken a 12-2 lead less than four minutes into the game.

Carter would make another 3-pointer and Truitt Spencer would add two more as the Golden Bears went 6-of-14 from behind the 3-point arc. Carter was even fouled on one of his attempts and he made all three free throws. The lead was as large as 18 points in the opening half but Miles led just 37-26 at halftime.

The long-range shooting was still in effect in the second half. Lane had cut the deficit to nine points in the opening minutes but the Golden Bears first three field goals in the second half were from downtown. Horton made his second of the game to push the lead back into double figures for good. Spencer, who was perfect on all four of his shots from long range, then swished 3-pointers on consecutive possessions to give Miles a 46-31 lead with 16:40 remaining.

Carter would make two more 3-pointers and went 6-of-10 from behind the arc. Alvin Miles (seven points, six assists) and Chase Ballard (seven points, three steals) each made 3-pointers as well, part of an 8-of-12 effort from three in the second half. It was the most 3-pointers made by Miles since hitting 15 of them against Carver Bible in January 2022.

But while the 3-point shooting took center stage, the Golden Bears were playing at a high level throughout, making 57 percent of their shots from the field while forcing the Dragons into 18 turnovers and holding them to 37.5 percent shooting from the field. Miles led by as many as 24 points in the second half before securing its third win by at least 20 points this season.

Jeremiah Foster scored 17 points and Kyle Houston added 14 for Lane. Horton (18 points, six rebounds) and Spencer (16 points) had career-high scoring efforts for Miles, which hosts LeMoyne-Owen on Monday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
