While Miles has been one of the best defensive teams in the nation under the stewardship of head coach
Fred Watson, it has lately posited it self as a team that can win by putting points on the board in bunches.
Monday night, after trailing by 12 points early in the second half, Miles scored 49 points over the final 17 minutes and won going away, earning a 72-62 win over LeMoyne-Owen at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. The Golden Bears shot 54 percent from the field in the second half - 63 percent from the 3-point arc - and was nearly perfect from the charity stripe in winning its 14th straight home contest.
The game played out like a three-act play. Miles played the lead role early, with five different players scoring from the field to help the Golden Bears open a 17-8 lead midway through the first half. But despite the initial success, danger was lurking in the form of foul trouble. Both starting guards -
Alvin Miles and
Truitt Spencer - picked up two fouls in the first 10 minutes and were forced to the bench. The Magicians saw the opportunity to take advantage and did just that.
Miles went cold for the remainder of the half, making just 1-of-7 shots from the field and turning the ball over four times. Meanwhile, LeMoyne-Owen grabbed the momentum by using pressure defense and getting hot on the offensive end. At one point, the Magicians made 6-of-7 shots from the floor and went into halftime with a 27-21 advantage.
The second act continued after the intermission and it wasn't looking good for the Golden Bears. Christian Wells (12 points) knocked down consecutive baskets in the lane as part of an 8-2 run to open the second half. A little more than two minutes into the final period, LeMoyne-Owen led 35-23. The game was beginning to look like a horror flick for Miles.
But just as all was beginning to look lost for Miles, the heroes returned to save the day.
Elijah Horton (eight points) buried a 3-pointer and added another bucket to begin the comeback.Â
Mykayle Carter knocked down a 3-ball and
Alvin Miles (game-high 19 points) would score nine consecutive points for the Golden Bears, the last coming on a 3-pointer that gave Miles a 40-39 advantage with less than 13 minutes to go.
The Magicians would tie the score but Carter (11 points) would take a feed from
Chase Ballard (two points, eight assists, four rebounds) and splash another triple to put Miles ahead 43-40. The Golden Bears would not trail again.Carter's third 3-ball with just more than four minutes left gave Miles a nine-point advantage. The lead would swell as high as 13 points over the final four minutes and LeMoyne-Owen would not get any closer than seven points down the stretch.
Tariq Shepherd (13 points), Chris Peoples and Micah Evans (10 points each) joined Wells among the double-digit scorers for LeMoyne-Owen.
Corey Trotter (16 points, six rebounds) and Spencer (nine points) were solid for Miles, which travels to Central State on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
