Lady Bears Struggle at SIAC Crossover

SIAC Crossover held in Albany, GA

The Lady Bears traveled to Albany, GA to participate in the SIAC Crossover this weekend. The Crossover featured all 14 SIAC volleyball teams. Each team played five games in two days, the Lady Bears finished 1-4.  

Action began Friday with the Golden Bears falling to the Panthers of Clark-Atlanta 20-25, 25-14, 19-25, and 17-25.  Mya Broom had a match high 13 kills, followed by Laila Esters and Kayla Johnson with eight.  Malena Catala had three aces.  Esters and Johnson led the front row with three blocks.  Catala guided the team with 27 assists.  Kayla Trawick and Chaiza Jones led the team defensively with 16 and 12 digs, respectively.

The afternoon contest featured a matchup versus the Tigers of Benedict College.  Miles fought hard in the contest, but fell short in 25-27, 25-23, 25-19, 21-25, and 11-15.  Broom and Zykellia Blount totaled double-digit kills with 11 and 10 respectively. Catala accumulated an astonishing 42 assists.  Trawick (12), Aaliyah Sanders (11), and Kiera Washington (11) all had double-digit digs.  

In the nightcap, the Lady Bears had a dominant performance against the Wildcats of Fort Valley State 22-25, 25-16, 25-14, and 25-12.  Broom (14) and Esters (12) led the way with kills. Catala served up 4 aces.  Brianna Little stood tall with 6 blocks. Catala added 33 assists to her total.  Chaiza contributed 22 digs in the contest.

On Saturday, the Lady Bears faced off against the Yellow Jackets of Allen University.  After going up 2-0 in the contest, Allen would mount a comeback and defeat the Golden Bears, 25-16, 25-17, 14-25, 19-25, and 11-15.  Laliah Hester and Broom had double-digit kills with 12 and 10 respectively.  Little was a wall on the front line with eight blocks.  Catala guided the team with 35 assists.  Jones kept play alive with 21 digs, Trawick contributed with 12 digs and Aaliyah Sanders had 11. 

The Lady Bears closed out the Crossover with a matchup against the Tigers of Edward Waters University. The Lady Bears would be swept by the Tigers 12-25, 18-25, and 14-25.  Broom topped the team with 10 kills, Catala contributed 19 assists and Jones had 13 digs.

The Lady Bears will be back in action this weekend when they travel to Mobile, AL. for a matchup against the Badgers of Spring Hill College, the reigning SIAC Champions on their home court, Game time is set for 5:00 p.m.  Saturday, the Lady bears will compete in the SIAC Mini Cluster. The Mini Cluster pits Eastern Division teams against Western Division teams that did not compete against each other in the SIAC Crossover. The Lady Bears will take on the Tigers of Savannah State University at 9:00 a.m and end the day with a matchup against the Golden Rams of Albany State University at 3:00 p.m.
