Golden Bears bats thump Tuskegee in weekend sweep

TUSKEGEE, Ala. -- Miles came out swinging this weekend during a three-game series against Tuskegee, scoring 42 runs, drawing 32 free passes and hitting .367 as a team in thumping the Golden Tigers 16-12, 16-5, and 10-4 at Washington Field. Isaiah Jordan drove in six runs while Michael Archie, Trey Rutledge and John Riley all hit home runs for the Golden Bears (14-14, 11-6 SIAC).

GAME 1 - Miles 16, Tuskegee 12

The Golden Bears scored 11 times in the first inning of the series, sending 16 batters to the plate in setting an early tone. A two-run double by Brandon Leroy and a bases-loaded double by Jordan Pearson that cleared the bases highlighted Miles' first time through the batting order that staked the team to a 7-0 lead. A pitching change did not bring relief for Tuskegee as Miles got run-scoring doubles from Rutledge and Kaleb Priest and a two-run single from Mason McClammy to close out the scoring in the opening frame.

The Golden Tigers had cut the deficit to 12-6 after four innings but Miles added two more runs in the fifth. McClammy added his fourth RBI of the contest on a bases-loaded walk. Max Davenport got in on the offensive fun with a run-scoring double in the sixth, and Rutledge hit a solo home run to lead off the eighth to close out the scoring for the Golden Bears. Judson McKinney picked up the win, allowing just one run in three innings of relief.

GAME 2 - Miles 16, Tuskegee 5

Miles scored the first 14 runs of the game in a contest that was not as close as the final score indicated. The Golden Bears started the rout with a seven-run second inning. Clifton Orr started the scoring with a run-scoring single and one out later, he scored on a single from Rutledge. That was the last hit of the inning for Miles as the Golden Tigers proceeded to walk or hit the next six batters, which plated five runs.

In the third inning, Miles added another seven runs. Anthony Ramos, Priest and Leroy all knocked in runs for a 10-0 lead. But the big hits came later. Jordan had a two-run triple right in front of a two-run blast from Riley that pushed the lead the 14-0. Miles added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings of the seven-inning affair and Kaleb Allen picked up the victory on the mound, allowing just five hits and two run in 5 1/3 inning, striking out four.

GAME 3 - Miles 10, Tuskegee 4

Miles took an early 3-0 lead but Tuskegee got them all back in the fourth. Still, the Golden Bears found their offensive stride late to take over the contest and finish the sweep.

Jordan put Miles back in front in the sixth with a RBI single. Orr added a run scoring safety before Archie hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot that put the Golden Bears ahead 8-3. The Golden Tigers got one of the runs back in the bottom of the frame but the Golden Bears added two insurance runs in the eighth, highlighted by a RBI single from Pearson to close out the scoring.

Mason Kirby picked up the win for Miles, allowing three earned runs over six innings, striking out four. Logan Watts pitched three scoreless frames with two strikeouts to earn the save.
