Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Miles reserves dominate in win over Chargers

In a game that was unusually close for the first 20 minutes, Miles dominated the second half en route to an 85-51 win over Southeastern Baptist on Thursday night at Knox-Windham Gymnasium.

The Golden Bears were playing without three of their top four scorers - Rodney Battle, Eddie Smith and Makai Vassell - and it took a little while for the reserves that assumed those minutes to get into the flow. But once they did, the Chargers had no answers as Miles outscored SBC 50-22 in the second half. Garrick Baines, who had played all of seven minutes and taken just one shot from the floor this season coming into the game, scored a game-high 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting over 18 minutes off the bench.

Miles trailed by four points early on and led just 23-22 before it made its first good run of the game. Todd Burt (nine points, seven rebounds) knocked down a baseline jumper, then took a feed on the inside for a big dunk that sparked a 9-2 run that gave the Golden Bears some breathing room. Still, the Chargers were down just four points before Mykayle Carter's layup with seconds to go sent Miles to the locker room with a 35-29 lead at halftime.

A basket by Jacobi York gave SBC a 40-39 lead four minutes into the second quarter before Miles took control of the game. Corey Trotter (11 points, 11 rebounds) scored five points during a 12-0 run that gave Miles a 51-40 lead with 12 minutes remaining. The big run came shortly thereafter. Ahead by eight with 10 minutes to go, the Golden Bears used a definitive 20-2 run - including 14 straight points - to put the game well out of reach. Six different players scored during the spurt which lasted five minutes and concluded with a bucket by Truitt Spencer (12 points, three steals) that gave Miles 71-45 lead with 4:55 to go.

Reginald Jones had 13 points to lead Southeastern Baptist. Alan Swenson had 10 points, four assists and three steals, Brison Rockcliffe had eight points, and Carter and Anthony Latty each added seven points for the Golden Bears, who play an exhibition at Oakwood on Tuesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
