After dropping its first two home matches in five-set thrillers, the Miles volleyball was able to dispatch Mississippi Valley State in four sets (25-22, 20-25, 25-15, 27-25) Monday night at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. Alexandria Wright had a monster night, finishing with a match-high 17 kills and hitting .531, while adding seven digs and two service aces for the Lady Bears (6-4). The win marked the team's first victory over a Division I opponent since 2016, when Miles beat Alcorn State.

Miles ran out to a 9-1 lead in the opening set and never trailed. The Delta Devilettes (1-8) nearly erased a late eight-point deficit when they pulled to within 22-21. But the Lady Bears were able to close out the set tot ake the early lead. Miles also led in the second set but MVSU scored eight straight points to take a 21-16 lead and ultimately even the match.

The Lady Bears dominated the third set to take control. With the scored tied, Miles went on a 10-2 run to open a 15-7 lead. Wright had a kill and two aces but MVSU was undone by five errors (four attack) and hit -.125 for the set. While 10 attack errors by the Delta Devilettes helped the cause, Miles did its job on the offensive end with 11 kills while hitting .233.

The final set looked like Miles would win going away. A kill by Kiera Washington (14 kills, nine digs) gave Miles a 23-18 lead before MVSU scored six consecutive points and was in position to force a fifth set. But Washington responded with a kill to stave off set point. With the score tied at 25, Cagejia Hosey (six kills, two aces)  and Anya Creecy (43 assists, 10 digs)  finished the match with back-to-back kills and send the Lady Bears on to victory.

Tamella Taylor (seven kills, .412 hitting percentage) and Chaiza Jones (match-high 19 digs) were big contributors for the Lady Bears, who play next at Talladega on Tuesday. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
