Lady Bears have strong showing at Owls Invitational

COLUMBUS, Miss. -- Miles had a strong showing in this weekend's Owls Invitational, winning three of the four matches to move its overall record to 4-2.  Kiera Washington and Alexandria Wright were the big hitters for the Lady Bears. Aaliyah Sanders, who took over as the primary setter this weekend, had 58 assists and 48 digs, and Chaiza Jones had a team-high 58 digs over the four matches.

Miles 3, Dillard 2 (25-19, 13-25, 20-25, 25-20, 15-12)
Sanders, in her first match as the starting setter, had eight kills, 10 assists and 14 kills as Miles came from behind to win in five sets. Wright had five kills and nine digs, Zykellia Jones added five kills and Jones added 10 digs to pace the Lady Bears.

Miles 3, Tougaloo 1 (23-25, 25-13, 25-13, 25-22)
Sanders (26 assists, 14 digs), Washington (16 kills, 23 digs), and Wright (16 kills, 10 digs) each had double-doubles and Jones added 19 digs as the Lady Bears overcame a slow start to win in four sets. The team had nine blocks and nine service aces while holding the Lady Bulldogs to a.032 hitting percentage.

Fisk 3, Miles 1 (19-25, 25-23, 25-11, 27-25)
Playing a third match on Saturday, the Lady Bears took an early lead before running out of gas in a four-set defeat. Washington had a match-high 14 kills and 11 digs, Sanders had six kills, a team-high 11 assists and 11 digs, and Jones added a team-high 12 digs to pace Miles. Wright added nine kills, eight digs, and two assists.

Miles 3, Agnes Scott 0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-23)
The Lady Bears closed out the Owls Invitational with a dominant sweep of Agnes Scott. The Scotties helped, making 30 errors and hitting -.054 as a team with more errors than kills in each set. Wright (nine) and Washington (eight) combined for more kills than the entire Agnes Scott team  (14). Sanders had 16 assists, nine digs and two block assists while Jones finished with a match-high 12 digs.

UP NEXT: Miles hosts Mississippi University for Women on Wednesday. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
