Golden Bears finish 2nd at PGA Works Collegiate Championship

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Miles' attempt at winning a second straight PGA Works Collegiate Championships came up just short on Wednesday as the Golden Bears claimed a runner's-up finish in the Division II competition at the Union League Golf Club.

The Golden Bears, who held the lead at the end of the first round, came into the final round nine shots off the pace in fifth place behind leader Kentucky State. Knowing that it had to not only make up the shots but pass four other teams in the 10-team field, Miles went to work. The five-man group of Christian Copen, Marquis Taylor, Britton Khalaf, Fred Windham and Phillip Darst hit the course before the leaders and were able to put pressure on them with their steady play.

Copen, who led the tournament after Day 1 after shooting 1-over 71, was still in the hunt for the individual title. He was the best in the field on par-5's for the week (-6) and added two more birdies on the back-nine on Wednesday. He shot a 7-over 78 on Wednesday and finished fifth overall (+14, 226), seven shots behind overall medalist Andres Navarro of CSU-Dominguez Hills. Taylor, though, had the best round of the day for Miles and his best of the tourney. His 14 pars helped him to a 5-over 75 in the round and moved him into the top-10 with a 231 (+19).

Miles shot a 309 in the final round, which was the best in the field on the final day. The Golden Bears were also the only team that had four golfers finish in the top 20 (Copen, Taylor, Khalaf - t18, and Windham - t20). But it was not enough to overcome CSU-Dominguez Hill, which shot 310 on the day and finished five shots in front of the Golden Bears. Miles, though, did finish in front of every HBCU in the Division II field, outpacing Lincoln (PA) by three strokes.
