Miles swept the Tuskegee in the Legacy Sports Diamond Classic on Friday at Regions Field, winning the opener 14-9 and taking the nightcap 8-0.
Kody Long was spectacular on the mound for the Golden Bears, tossing his third complete game and second shutout in the second game of the twinbill to earn his eight victory of the season. The two victories pushed Miles' win streak over Tuskegee to 20 games, a run that began more than seven years ago.
GAME 1 - Miles 14, Tuskegee 9
The opener went back and forth, going from a solid pitchers duel into a slugfest near the end. Down 1-0 in the bottom of the first, Miles got RBI hits from Long and
Jacob Bisharat to take the lead. The score was tied at three when
William Johnson drove in
Michael Archie with a single before a
Will Cantey sacrifice fly brought in
Max Davenport for a 5-3 advantage after six innings.
Tuskegee got one of them back in the seventh on a RBI double by Harrison Barnes but a perfect relay from Long to
Peyton Caron to
James Bitner cut Barnes down at third to end the threat. Miles responded with a 5-spot in the bottom of the frame, highlighted by a two-run single by Johnson to seemingly take control. But the Golden Tigers took advantage of the sole Golden Bears error of the contest to get all five runs back in the eighth.
Tyler Allen was summoned from the bullpen to quell the threat with the go-ahead run at the plate to keep the score at 10-9.
In the bottom of the eighth, Miles would retake control. Johnson would pick up his fourth hit and RBI with a single that scored Bisharat. The big blow came from the bat of Caron, whose bases-clearing double netted three more runs that put the game out of reach. Allen would strike out the side in the ninth to earn his fourth save in front of
Kolton Easterwood (7-3), who allowed four runs in seven innings for the win.
GAME 2 - Miles 8, Tuskegee 0
Long was spectacular in the nightcap, possibly one pitch away from tossing a perfect game. While the southpaw was never on a no-hit alert because he gave up a single to start the game, he was completely unhittable for the remainder of the contest. The senior retired the final 21 hitters in order, striking out 10 in the process, to go to 8-1 on the season.
With the Tuskegee offense on ice, Miles consistantly added runs against Golden Tigers starter Jalen Daniels. The Golden Bears plated three in the second, getting RBI from Caron,
Jeffrey Wright and
Eli Snelson to take the lead. In the third, a sacrifice fly by Wright scored Davenport as part of a two-run inning. Miles added two more in the fourth as Bitner's RBI double was the big hit and he would come around to score on another Tuskegee error.
Meanwhile, Long continued to mow down the Golden Tigers. He got seven of his punchouts over the last three frames, including six in-a-row at one point. He finished his gem by getting Albert Gonzalez to ground out to short to finish the contest.
