Miles' march to a school record for most consecutive wins in a single season hit an unexpected road bump Monday night against Spring Hill.
Midway through the second half, the Golden Bears trailed the Badgers - a team it beat by 29 points last month and had won 10 straight from - by three points. But the defense was able to find enough stops until the offense, primarily
Yasim Hooker, was able to string together enough buckets to outlast Spring Hill 62-58 at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. The victory was the 14th straight for Miles (20-3, 14-1 SIAC West), which surpassed the in-season win mark set by the 2019-20 team. The victory also gave the team a third 20-win campaign since
Fred Watson took over the program four seasons ago.
The Golden Bears entered the game as the No. 7 team in Division II defending the 3-point shot. But the Badgers were finding a lot of success from the outside. They made 42 percent of their shots from distance in the first half that helped erase an 11-point hole, and when Tana Kopa drilled another 3-ball to open the second half. Spring Hill led 33-32. Miles had re-established a four-point advantage before Kopa nailed another 3-pointer that started a stretch of seven consecutive points to stake SHC to a 49-46 lead with 9:44 left.
Both teams went cold from the field for the next two minutes before Hooker started to heat up. He knocked down a jumper to bring the Golden Bears within a point, then scored again on the next possession to give them the lead. After
Mykayle Carter (eight points five rebounds) scored, Hooker took to the air. He grabbed a lob from
Brandon Miller and slammed it home to conclude an 8-0 run that put Miles ahead 54-49.
Kopa (team-high 16 points) would end a seven-minute field goal drought for Spring Hill when his basket cut their deficit to 56-54 but
Chase Ballard (six points) would answer with a layup on the ensuing Miles possession to push the lead back to four points. While Miles would not make another field goal the rest of the game, Miller and
Truitt Spencer hit four free throws in the final minute to make John Abate's 3-pointer at the buzzer moot.
Beril Kabamba had 13 points and Sam Davidson added 12 points to pace Spring Hill. Hooker had 16 points, 13 rebounds, four assists and four blocked shots to lead Miles, which also got solid performances from
Elijah Horton (nine points, six rebounds),
Anthony Fairley (nine points, four rebounds), and
Joel Logan (six points, four rebounds).
