Three weeks ago, Miles suffered one of its ugliest defeats in years at the hands of Tuskegee. On Saturday, the Lady Bears were able to exact a measure of revenge.
Miles raced out to an early lead, watched it evaporate in the second half, but still found a way to win going away, posting a 71-62 victory over the Golden Tigerettes at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. The win snapped a six-game skid against Tuskegee, broke TU's 13-game win streak, and kept the Golden Tigerettes (18-3, 12-2 SIAC West) from clinching the SIAC West Division crown. It also marked the first time that the Lady Bears (15-5, 8-5) had won consecutive games in nearly a month.
While
Nadia Cathey,
Imani Williams and
Camryn London led the way for the Lady Bears, it was the work of
Breah McGrady and
Tahlor Sutton off the bench that played a big part in the second half after Tuskegee had wiped out what was once a 13-point advantage for Miles. The Lady Bears held a seven-point advantage with four minutes left in the third quarter before Tuskegee ran off eight straight points, punctuated by a steal and layup by Brittney Bolin that gave the Golden Tigerettes their first lead, 45-44, with 1:09 in period.
Enter McGrady, who had just re-entered the game on the possession prior to Tuskegee taking the lead. She scored on a long jumper to put Miles back in front on the next possession. Then, as time expired in the third, she drained a 3-ball from the corner to help the Lady Bears to a 50-45 lead. That did not stop Tuskegee, which continued to charge in the fourth quarter. A 9-2 run at the beginning of the period had pushed the Golden Tigerettes to a 58-55 lead with six minutes left. But Miles was able to find an answer and it came on the defensive side of the ball.
TU missed eight of its last nine shots with five turnovers to close out the ball game. Cathey made two free throws after Tuskegee was assessed a technical foul and London would score on a drive to the bucket to give Miles the lead for good, 59-58, with 4:20 remaining. Sutton, who came in to give Cathey a breather, continued to turn up the defensive pressure against the Tuskegee ball handlers. She had two steals, a block, and scored five points down the stretch to put the game on ice.
Bolin scored 19 points while Ashaila Jackson and Arielle McElroy each had 17 points for Tuskegee. Cathey scored a game-high 21 points, London added 13 points, and Williams finished with a career-high 17 rebounds to go along with nine points, five assists, three steals and two blocks for Miles, which hosts Spring Hill on Monday. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
