MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Miles opened its 2022 baseball campaign with a 7-1 loss against Auburn Montgomery Tuesday afternoon at Q.V. Lowe Field. The offense faltered after a nice start and the bullpen could not hold back the Warhawks offense in the late innings.
The Golden Bears jumped in front in the top of the third.
Clifton Orr singled and took second on a wild pitch. One out later,
Will Cantey went the opposite way for a single to left, scoring Orr for a 1-0 advantage. But AUM got it right back in the bottom of the frame as Jackson Ceman knocked in a run with a one-out single of his own against Miles starter
Austin Douglas.
The Warhawks took the lead for good in the fifth when Brody Cyer hit a two-out, two-run homer to right against reliever
Mason Kirby (0-1). The game really unraveled in the seventh against reliever
Kody Long. After a clean sixth inning, AUM jumped on the lefty for four runs in the next inning to break the game open. The back half of the contest was not fruitful offensively for the Golden Bears, whose last 10 hitters were retired in order and Miles - which had just six hits on the day - did not have a hit after a leadoff single by Orr in the fifth.
The Golden Bears are back in action this weekend as they travel to Shorter for a three-game series, opening with a single game on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
