Lady Bears win fourth straight

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Miles trailed by 12 points in the first half but got big performances from Dereseia Randle and Iemyiah Harris to earn a 64-60 win over Edward Waters on Saturday afternoon at the Adams-Jenkins Complex. The win was the fourth straight for the Lady Bears (5-1, 2-0 SIAC West), who shot more than 50 percent from the field in the second half.

The Lady Bears trailed by eight points early in the third quarter but an offensive rebound and putback by Janiya Labyzon gave Miles its first lead since the first quarter, 40-39, with 3:25 left in the stanza. Edward Waters still held a one-point advantage at the start of the fourth quarter but Eunique McKinney (six points, four rebounds) scored to put Miles back in front and on the ensuing possession, Feliah Greer drained a 3-pointer to increase the Lady Bears advantage to 47-43.

The game would bounce back and forth over the remainder of the period, and after two Paige Sanders (13 points)  free throws, the score was tied at 60 with one minute remaining. But on the next possession, Harris was fouled and split two free throws to give Miles the lead. Then Madison Lee (six points, four steals) got a steal and got the ball to Harris, who was fouled again. She made both freebies to increase the lead. EWC still had a chance to close the deficit with 20 seconds left but missed a pair from the charity stripe. Randle grabbed the rebound on the second miss and was fouled. She split two free throws with 11 seconds left and secured the win for the Lady Bears.

Jourdan Avery had 17 points and Khadijah Smith added 12 points for Edward Waters. Randle led all players in points (18 on 8-of-10 shooting) and rebounds (nine) while Harris added 17 points, three assists and two steals for Miles, which travels to face Savannah State on Monday. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
