SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Miles saw its four-game win streak cone to an end Monday night in a 66-56 loss to Savannah State at Tiger Arena. It was the second loss of the season for the Lady Bears (5-2, 2-1 SIAC West), both of the coming at the hands of the 20th-ranked Lady Tigers (6-0, 4-0 SIAC East).
While the first matchup between the teams last month came down to the wire, Monday night's affair was controlled by SSU. Miles never held a lead and found itself in a double-digit hole late in the second quarter. Still, after a 3-pointer by
Iemyiah Harris right before the buzzer, the Lady Bears trailed 32-26 at the half.
A tough shooting night was exasperated in the third quarter when Miles missed 11 of its 13 shots from the field.
Nuriyah Slaton (seven points, five rebounds) knocked down a 3-pointer less that two minutes into the period to cut the Lady Bears deficit to five points. Unfortunately, that would be the last field goal until Harris made a basket with 20 seconds remaining in the stanza. By then, Savannah State had opened a 14-point advantage and put Miles in a deep hole.
Feliah Greer (12 points, five assists, four rebounds) came out smoking in the fourth quarter, scoring the Lady Bears first eight points to get the deficit back into single digits. When
Tederia Ashley (four points, five rebounds) scored with 3:24 left, Miles had gotten to within 55-50. But a minute later, Jashiyah Jones (12 points) drained a 3-pointer and the Savannah State lead was back to 10 points. Despite shooting 50 percent from the field in the fourth quarter, Miles was never able able to get closer than eight points from that moment forward.
Nyla Allen had a game-high 19 points to pace Savannah State. Harris had a team-high 16 points along with six rebounds and two blocks, while
Dereseia Randle added 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds for Miles, which plays at UAB on Dec. 13 in a game that counts as an exhibition for the Lady Bears. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.Â
