Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Golden Bears suffer first defeat

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The road was unkind to the Miles men's basketball team, dropping a 58-55 decision to Edward Waters Saturday afternoon at the Adams-Jenkins Complex. The loss was the first this season for the 24th-ranked Golden Bears (6-1, 2-1 SIAC West) and broke a streak of 23 consecutive regular-season victories dating back to December 13 of last year.

Miles never trailed by more than five points during any point of the ballgame. Edward Waters (2-2, 2-2 SIAC East) was held to a season-low in points and shot under 35 percent from the field, including just 1-of-10 from beyond the 3-point arc. But the Tigers never trailed over the final 12 minutes of the contest. After Yasim Hooker (eight points, five rebounds) scored with four minutes remaining to tie the game at 50, Larry Kuimi (15 points, 10 rebounds) responded with a bucket on the ensuing possession to give EWC the lead for good.

Down by four, Mykayle Carter (six points, five rebounds) drained a 3-pointer with 2:41 left to trim the deficit to 54-53. But while Miles held the Tigers without a field goal over the last three-and-a-half minutes of the game, it was not able to capitalize. The Golden Bears would miss three shots and turn the ball over once on its next four possessions and EWC was able to finish its business at the free throw line, making all six freebies down the stretch. Carter had a chance to tie the game at the horn but his 3-pointer came up short, giving the upset win to Edward Waters.

Tavares Oliver had 14 points and Johnathan Kanyanga added six points, 12 rebounds, and five blocked shots for Edward Waters. Rodney Battle finished with 16 points, four rebounds, four assists, and two steals, Makai Vassell added 11 points, and Anthony Latty had eight points and a team-high six rebounds for Miles, which travels to face Savannah State on Monday. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
