Miles drained 13 3-pointers and used a big run in the first half take control in a 79-58 win over Montevallo on Tuesday night at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. It is the Golden Bears (4-0) fourth consecutive win over the Falcons (1-4), who have now lost four straight overall.
After trailing by two points early, Miles took the lead for good with 15:33 left in the first half on a
Yasim Hooker (six points, five rebounds, four assists) bucket. The Falcons were down just two points midway through the opening period when the Golden Bears found their stroke from outside. Big man
Corey Trotter started the long-ball brigade when he drained a 3-pointer with 9:57 left in the half.
Chase Ballard,
Elijah Horton and
Rodney Battle each followed with baskets from deep as part of a 16-4 run. When
Anthony Latty scored with 6:42 left, Miles held a 34-20 lead.
The Golden Bears went into the break with a 42-29 advantage and Montevallo never cut the deficit under 10 points the rest of the night. But Miles continue to fire it up from deep, knocking down four more 3-pointers over a five-minute span. When
Makai Vassell drained a triple with 11:44 left in the game, Miles held a 65-45 lead. The Golden Bears shot 57 percent beyond the arc as Batttle (17 points, five rebounds, six assists),
Truitt Spencer (13 points) and Trotter made three 3's each. The Golden Bears led by as many as 23 points late in the contest.
MJ Jones and Aiden Gardiner each had 13 points to pace Montevallo. Trotter (13 points, three rebounds, two assists), Ballard (eight points), and Vassell (seven points, game-high nine rebounds) played well for Miles, which hosts Clark Atlanta on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
