Savannah State overcame an early fourth-quarter run from Miles with a big surge of its own down the Lady Bears 62-57 Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Lady Bears Tip-Off Classic at Knox-Windham Gymnasium.
Iemyiah Harris scored a game-high 16 points and Miles scored 18 points off of 20 Tigers turnovers but could not pull out the victory against the defending SIAC Eastern Division winners.
Miles trailed by 11 points in the first quarter but the score was tied at 34 at the half. A full-court pass from
Imani Williams to
Feliah Greer led to a bucket with three seconds left in the third quarter that tied the score at 48 heading into the final period. The Lady Bears then used a 9-0 run at the start of the fourth quarter - punctuated by a 3-point play by Williams (eight points, eight rebounds, four assists, three blocks) - to give Miles a 55-48 advantage with 6:48 remaining.
From there, though, Savannah State was able to shut the door on the defensive end. Miles would miss its next 11 shots from the field as the Tigers scored 12 consecutive points to take a 60-55 lead with 10 seconds remaining. Williams would score to cut the deficit to three points but two late free throws by Jashiyah Jones (10 points) iced the game for the Tigers.
Amari Heard had 16 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks and Mia Goolsby added 14 points for Savannah State. Miles got solid efforts from Greer (10 points),
Eunique McKinney (nine points, four rebounds, three steals), and
Tederia Ashley (nine points, 12 rebounds, two blocks). The Lady Bears are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to take on Oakwood. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
