JACKSON, Tenn. -- For the second time in three season, Miles has put together a double-digit win streak. The Golden Bears had to rely on their defense as the offense sputtered, but still did not trail in the second half of a 53-45 win over Lane Monday night. It was the 10th straight win for Miles (16-3, 10-1 SIAC West), which continues its march towards a third straight Western Division title.
Miles had been averaging more than 76 points per game during its win streak and had made almost 13 3-pointers per game over the last three wins. But Lane was limiting shot opportunities and the ones the Golden Bears did get were not falling or most of the first half. But
Brandon Miller was able to find the range late, drilling two 3-balls inside the final three minutes of the period that gave Miles the lead for good. A basket by
Truitt Spencer at the horn gave the Golden Bears a 24-20 advantage heading into the break.
The Dragons would cut the deficit to one point early in the second half. But a 3-point play by
Yasim Hooker, followed by his steal and breakaway dunk on the ensuing Lane possession gave Miles a 29-23 lead. The Golden Bears would then use a five-minute stretch midway through the second half to grab control. A 14-4 run, punctuated by back-to-back 3-pointers from Miller and
Elijah Horton gave Miles a 43-30 lead with 11:09 left.
A 3-pointer by
Mykayle Carter with 4:46 remaining reestablished a 10-point advantage, 49-39, for the Golden Bears. Lane continued to battle and closed to within five, 50-45, with 1:46 on the clock. But the Dragons would miss their last three shots from the field while Miller and
Joel Logan (five points, game-high seven rebounds) drained some late free throws to establish the final margin.
Kylan Haywood scored 12 points to lead the Dragons. Hooker (14 points, five rebounds, two blocks, two steals), Miller (10 points, six rebounds, three assists) and Spencer (nine points) were the high scorers for Miles, which hosts Clark Atlanta on Wednesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
