Lady Bears go cold in loss to Kentucky State

Miles went more than 11 minutes without scoring between the second and third quarters Monday night, turning a close ball game into an easy 59-51 win for Kentucky State at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. The Lady Bears (11-3, 5-3 SIAC West) shot just 29 percent from the field in seeing their three-game win streak snapped.

When Markisha Body scored with 4:13 left in the second quarter, Miles trailed 28-26. But from there, the Lady Bears' shooting went as cold as the temperature outside. First, they missed six straight shots over the next three minutes that could have tied the score or given them the lead. Over the final 93 seconds of the first half, Miles allowed just one bucket but missed its only shot but turned it over three times and went into the half down behind 33-26.

Things did not get any better to start the second half. The Lady Bears kept putting up shots and nothing was falling. Head coach Phillip Wallace, Jr. tried multiples of combinations on the floor to get the offensive jump-started but to no avail. Even when Miles would have advantages on the fast break, it could not convert. In all, the Lady Bears missed their first seven shots of the third quarter and by the time Imani Williams scored on an offensive putback, nearly seven minutes had elapsed and KSU still had a 43-28 advantage.

Miles scored just five points in the third quarter and trailed by as many as 18 points early in the fourth. The Lady Bears started to put things together at that point, using a 13-2 run to get the deficit back into single digits. Deresia Randle (seven points, six rebounds) scored five points during the stretch, the last coming on a three-point play with 2:50 remaining to bring the Lady Bears to within 51-44. KSU, though, would stem the tide from there and Miles would not get any closer.

Andrea Wallace had a game-high 14 points, Hilani Cantone added 12 points, and Laurie Thomas added eight points and 11 rebounds for Kentucky State. Camryn London led Miles with 12 points, Williams had nine points and a team-high nine rebounds, and Tahlor Sutton added six points for Miles, which travels to Spring Hill on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
