Lady Bears back on winning track

MOBILE, Ala. -- Miles did not have a single player score in double figures Saturday afternoon but the entire team pitched in to turn up the defensive pressure on Spring Hill in a 58-42 win at the Outlaw Recreation Center. The Golden Bears scored 21 points on 28 turnovers by the Badgers, who shot under 30 percent for the game.

The Lady Bears (12-3, 6-3 SIAC West) trailed by two points after the first quarter but used a big second quarter to take control of the contest and it was the defense that led the charge. Imani Williams had  steals and fastbreak layups on consecutive Spring Hill possessions to give Miles a 16-13 advantage less than three minutes into the quarter. The Badgers (3-13, 1-6) gave up nine consecutive points to fall behind and continued to give Miles all the help it needed to stretch the lead.

In the second quarter alone, Miles forced 11 Spring Hill turnovers and converted them into 12 points. The Badgers missed seven of their 10 shots from the field during the period as well. The Lady Bears would end the quarter on a 10-3 spurt, the last two coming on fastbreak scores by Jakera Ellerbee (team-high nine points) and Alana Gibbs, that sent them into the break with a 31-20 lead.

Miles continued to push the pace in the third quarter. Camryn London (eight points, five rebounds) knocked down a 3-pointer, then converted a layup after a steal by Olivia Mosley that pushed the lead to 38-22 less than three minutes into the period. Brandy Lee did all she could to keep Spring Hill in the game. She scored 11 of the Badgers' 14 points in the third period, the last coming on a free throw that cut the deficit to 11 points late in the quarter. Still, the Lady Bears led 46-34 heading into the fourth.

Spring Hill was able to get as close as eight points when Tyashia Bostick knocked down a 3-pointer less than two minutes into the final period. But Miles scored the final eight points of the game as Spring Hill missed its final 10 shots from the field and the Lady Bears won going away.

Lee scored a game-high 20 points for Spring Hill while Bostick and Mathilde Nicolas each had six points. Williams had eight points, five rebounds, five steals, three assists, and three blocked shots to lead Miles, who also got solid efforts from Markisha Body (four points, six rebounds, three assists) and Nadia Cathey (eight points). The Lady Bears are back in action on Monday night when they travel to face Tuskegee. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
