Miles dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 4 Lee Friday afternoon at historic Rickwood Field, snapping a five-game win streak. The Golden Bears (8-7) got outstanding pitching from
James Owen and
Austin Douglas and had two big opportunities to do damage but the Flames (22-2) were able to work their way through the jams in picking up their 11th consecutive victory.
Trailing 1-0 in the fourth, Miles loaded the bases with one out against Lee starter Logan Workman (4-0). Right fielder
Will Cantey smoked a ball back up the middle but right into the glove of second baseman Colton Yeager, who flipped to second and doubled off
Peyton Caron, who had no chance of getting back to the bag.
In the ninth, Miles trailed 3-0 but - again - loaded the bases, this time with on one out against Lee closer Andy Rivera. Catcher Jeff Wright, though, would ground into a 4-6-3 double play, which scored pinch hitter
Drake Fondren but put a serious damper on the rally.
William Johnson would strike out to end the game, earning Rivera his eighth save of the season.
In the loss, Owen (0-1) used an assortment of off-speed pitches and a fastball that would normally not make many pitchers envious to keep the Flames off balanced. He allowed two solo home runs and two bloop singles but kept Miles in the game, pitching into the eight inning. He allowed just the four hits, two earned runs and struck out six. Douglas entered with a runner on in the eight but after allowing the first batter to reach on an error, he got the next six batters out, inducing strike outs on three of the final five hitters.
Miles will host Lee in a doubleheader on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for noon. Prior to the start of the first game. the Golden Bears will honor their seniors in the final home contests of their careers.
