Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lady Bears dominate during weekend sweep

Miles was able to secure its first two home wins of the season by sweeping Spring Hill this weekend at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. The Lady Bears took the first game 59-46 on Saturday and won going away on Sunday with a 74-43 victory on Sunday. The Lady Bears (4-10) held the Badgers (0-2) to 28 percent shooting on the weekend and forced 54 turnovers during the two games. Markisha Body (24 points) and Nadia Cathey (23 points) shined on offense while Raiana Johnson (25 rebounds, 5 blocks, 4 steals) was the defensive star.

SATURDAY - Miles 59, Spring Hill 46

The Lady Bears got off to solid start offensively but it was their defense that ultimately delivered a win that broke a four-game losing streak. After falling behind early, Miles used a 13-2 run down the stretch in the first quarter to take the lead. Cathey knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to close the stretch and give the team a 21-17 advantage at the end of the period.

Spring Hill would retake the lead in the second quarter but Amya Bryant would score all six of her points as Miles closed the half scoring nine of the final 11 points to enter the break with a 33-27 advantage. A steal and fastbreak layup by Body (10 points) pushed the Lady Bears advantage into double digits for the first time (43-33) midway through the third quarter. The Badgers would get no closer than seven points the rest of the way. The Miles defense was stifling in the second half, holding Spring Hill to just 23 percent shooting from the field and allowed just eight points in the fourth quarter.

Katie Krout (team-high 16 points) and Ariel Thompson (12 points, 12 rebounds) paced Spring Hill. Cathey scored a game-high 18 points, Kierra Patrick scored a career-high 12 points while adding six rebounds and four steals, while Johnson had 15 rebounds (one short of her career high), four points and four blocked shots, which tied a career high.

SUNDAY - Miles 74, Spring Hill 43

Miles took control early and did not look back, securing its first 30-point win over a Division II opponent since Dec. 30, 2010. Miles allowed just one basket from the field in the first quarter and did not allow the Badgers a bucket on nine attempts in the third quarter to put the game away early.

Katie Krout scored the only basket for Spring Hill midway through the first quarter and it tied the game at 5. But Bryant drained a 3-pointer on the next possession and Miles would score the final nine points of the quarter. A bucket by Raven Hand (eight points, four rebounds, three assists) pushed the lead into double figures early in the second quarter but it was a 13-2 run late in the period, paced by six points from Body and punctuated by a 3-pointer from Tomesia Staten, helped Miles into the break with a 31-17 advantage.

Two quick baskets by Patrick and another hoop from Breah McGrady (seven points) gave Miles a 20-point lead in the opening 75 seconds of the second half. The Lady Bears would close out the quarter with consecutive 3-pointers from Staten and Body (13 points) to go into the fourth quarter ahead by 29 points. That was just the beginning of the 3-point barrage from Miles, who added four more 3-balls, all from its freshmen guards (Staten, Hand and Nia Bradley) who saw significant playing time in the final period of the rout, as the lead grew as large as 33 points.

Spring Hill was led by Thompson (13 points, eight rebounds) and Lindi DeBilzen (11 points). Staten scored 12 points (4-of-5 on 3-pointers), Bryant scored five points, grabbed four rebounds, and dished a career-high seven assists, Katrice Jackson had six points and six rebounds, and Johnson had a game-high 10 rebounds for the Lady Bears.
