Lady Bears power past FVSU

Miles won its third straight contest, using a late surge in the fourth quarter to push past Fort Valley State 67-49 Wednesday night at Knox-Windham Gymnasium.

When Torri Myers scored on an easy layup with 4:18 remaining, the Wildcats (2-1) trailed 49-47. But from there, Miles took over. Nadia Cathey scored five straight points as part of a 7-0 run to give the Lady Bears (5-10) some breathing room. Diamond Jones (team-high 18 points) would stop the run with a driving layup, scoring without one of her shoes that she lost near half court.. But immediately thereafter, Jones was whistled for a personal foul and a technical foul, which gave Miles four free throws and the ball. Cathey (game-high 19 points, five rebounds, three assists) drained all four freebies and the Lady Bears would close the game on an 18-2 run to win going away.

Some travel misfortunes for the Wildcats caused the team to arrive late and the game started an hour past its scheduled time. But while FVSU basically stepped off the bus and began playing, it was Miles that was stuck in neutral. The Lady Bears missed their first eight shots from the field, all four free throw attempts and turned the ball over four times and did not have a point on the board until Raiana Johnson (six points, game-high 11 rebounds) drained two free throws with 4:08 left in the period. Fortunately, Fort Valley State could not get much going itself and those free throws by Johnson tied the game at 2.

The Wildcats led 11-9 after the first quarter but the Lady Bears scored the first eight points of the second quarter, punctuated by a 3-pointer from Nia Bradley (five points), to jump out in front. When Katrice Jackson (10 points, five rebounds) scored on a short jumper, Miles led by seven points - its biggest lead of the half - with three minutes before the break. But FVSU closed the quarter on a 7-1 run and trailed just 27-26 at halftime.

The game remained close into the third quarter. The Wildcats took a three-point lead and had the game tied at 35 with less than three minutes left in the frame. But Jasmine Thompson (nine points, five rebounds) scored and was fouled on the ensuing possession. She completed the three-point play and Miles would never trail again.

Myers had 17 points, six rebounds, two blocks and two steals for Fort Valley State. Kierra Patrick (nine points, nine rebounds) and Amya Bryant (nine points) each were big contributors for Miles, which hosts Albany State at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.
