MOBILE, Ala. -- Miles used two big second half performances to outlast Spring Hill this weekend at the Outlaw Recreation Center. The Golden Bears earned an 86-76 win on Saturday and followed with a 64-49 victory on Sunday.
Avery Brown averaged 24 points, seven rebounds and five assists over the two contests and Miles outscored the Badgers by 23 points in the second half to win going away.
SATURDAY - Miles 86, Spring Hill 76
The Golden Bears raced out to a big lead in the first half and never trailed during the entire game, but it took a strong effort down the stretch for Miles to come away with the victory over the Badgers. Miles shot 52 percent from the floor and 86 percent from the free throw line during the second half to hold off Spring Hill.
Brown scored five points and
Richard Feagin (12 points, six rebounds, five assists) added four more as the Golden Bears opened a 13-3 advantage less than eight minutes into the contest. An 11-1 stretch midway through the opening half, punctuated by a
Yasim Hooker (15 points, seven rebounds) bucket, gave Miles its biggest lead - 26-10 - with 8:26 left before halftime. But then, the Golden Bears defense disappeared and the Badgers came roaring back. A 3-pointer by John Abate in the final seconds helped Spring Hill forge a tie at 37 going into the break.
Miles would score the first six points of the second half to quickly reestablish its lead. Spring Hill would hang tight, remaining within a possession as late as the 4:40 mark in the second half. But a 10-2 run over the next three minutes put the game away for the Golden Bears as they made 7-of-8 free throws in the final minute to close out the contest.
Beril Kabamba had 18 points and 10 rebounds and David Daniels added 14 points to lead Spring Hill. Brown had 27 points and seven rebounds and
Joel Logan added 13 points and five rebounds for the Golden Bears.
SUNDAY - Miles 64, Spring Hill 49
Spring Hill, again, gave Miles fits in the first half. But the Badgers had no answers for Brown, who scored 13 points in the second half, or the Golden Bears defense, which held the Badgers to just 20 percent shooting from the field and 18 points over the final 20 minutes..
There were 10 lead changes and five ties in the first half but a
Ryan Calhoun 3-pointer and another bucket from
Jelani Watson-Gayle (11 points, seven rebounds) helped Miles establish a six-point advantage late in the period before going into the half with a 33-31 lead. But Brown started to get loose in the second half. He scored five points in the first three minutes to give the Golden Bears a 5-point cushion. Meanwhile, the defense became downright stingy, holding Spring Hill without a basket for 10 minutes. During that stretch, the Badgers missed 13 shots and turned the ball over three times.
Meanwhile, the Golden Bears found enough traction on the offensive end to stretch the lead. A 3-point play by Logan gave Miles a 45-33 lead. Four minutes later, Calhoun (13 points, six rebounds) drained his third triple of the game for a 15-point advantage and when
Anthony Latty (four points, five rebounds) slammed one home with 4:26 remaining, Miles would open a 56-39 lead, its largest of the game. Spring Hill would miss 28 of its 35 shot attempts in the second half as it lost to Miles for the seventh straight time.
Daniels (18 points, 12 rebounds) and Kabamba (nine points, nine rebounds) were the top performers for Spring Hill. Brown had 21 points, eight assists and seven rebounds and Hooker added six points and a team-high 10 rebounds for Miles.
