ERIE, Pa. -- Miles closed its four-game, season-opening trip in Pennsylvania by absorbing a tough 65-60 loss to 25th-ranked Gannon on Wednesday afternoon. The Lady Bears (0-4) were dominant early, opening a 14-point advantage in the first half, but a cold start to the fourth quarter put a damper on the possible upset.
A 3-pointer by
Markisha Body gave Miles a 49-45 lead with less than 90 seconds remaining in the third quarter. But the Golden Knights (2-0) would score the final five points of the period to take the lead going into the fourth quarter. From there, things did not get much better for the Lady Bears. Gannon held Miles without a point for the first seven minutes of the fourth quarter until
Raven Hand knocked down a 3-pointer to squelch a 12-0 run for the Golden Knight. During that stretch, Miles missed 11 shots and turned the ball over six times.
Miles would pull to with three points twice in the final minute. But Gannon made all eight of its free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
The tough ending took away from a raucous start by the Lady Bears. Using fullcourt defensive pressure from the start, Miles jumped into a lead that it would not relinquish for the entirety of the opening period. A 3-pointer by
Amya Bryant gave Miles a nine-point cushion with three minutes left in the frame, the Lady Bears forced nine turnovers, and went into the second quarter with a 19-12 advantage.
A 3-ball by Hand to open the second quarter - one of four she made in the game - pushed the Miles advantage into double figures for the first time. When
Mya Millner knocked down a jumper with 5:51 left before halftime, the Lady Bears had a 30-16 lead. It was the biggest margin either team would enjoy on the afternoon. But Miles went ice cold the rest of the quarter, missing its final 12 shots from the field. Free throws from
Jasmine Thompson and
Nadia Cathey kept it from being a complete washout but Gannon still went into the half with a 35-33 lead.
The Lady Bears quickly reasserted themselves after the break. A layup by
Katrice Jackson and 3-pointer from Hand put Miles back in front and it held the lead until a Gannon free throw at the end of the third quarter gave the Golden Knights a 50-49 lead with 10 minutes remaining.
Tori Obenrader had 19 points, eight rebounds and four steals to lead the Golden Knights. Hand had 18 points and six rebounds, Millner finished with 10 points and three rebounds, and
Kierra Patrick added six points, three rebounds and four assists for Miles.
