It has been a while since Miles has been able to breathe easy down the stretch during a home game. But the Lady Bears certainly showed they can handle prosperity.
Miles used a big run in the second quarter to break open a close game before slamming the door shut on Lane in the fourth quarter of a 75-56 rout of Lane Monday night at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. It was the fifth straight win for the first-place Lady Bears (14-5, 9-2 SIAC West), who remain perfect at home this season in eight tries and extended their home win streak to 10 straight games dating back to last season.
Some of those home wins have not been easy to come by, especially last month when Miles nearly blew an 18-point second half lead to start January an won the final three by nine total points (including one game in overtime). There would be no such dramatics necessary against defending SIAC champion Lane (6-13, 5-7) as the Lady Bears finished their second straight game with the reserve unit on the floor.
Miles was making it rain from beyond the 3-point arc in the first quarter.
Najla Shamsid-Deen,
Sakina Wynn,
Charlisa Wellington and
Amya Bryant all knocked down triples in the opening period but Lane got two buckets inside the final minute and trailed just 20-19 at the end of the first, Miles did not trail until Ra'Keta Shelton (13 points, 8 rebounds) knocked down a free throw with 7:05 left in the second quarter to put the Dragons ahead 23-22.
But that lead was short lived.
Shamsid-Deeen would score on the next possession to put Miles back in front for good. It was the beginning of an 11-0 run by the Lady Bears.
Victoria Sutton would score five points during the binge and
Mya Millner (11 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals) capped it with a steal and layup to give Miles its first double-digit lead, 33-23, with just less than five minutes remaining in the half. The spread would get as large as 11 points before the Lady Bears went into the half with a 38-29 advantage.
Kierra Patrick would help up the Miles lead to 15 points with a basket nearly six minutes into the third quarter before Lane scored eight straight points to get back into the contest. But after Wynn hit two free throws 10 seconds into the fourth quarter to give Miles a 57-46 lead, the Dragons' deficit was never back in single digits for the remainder of the contest. The Lady Bears capped their big win when
Jessica Hollis (9 points, 5 rebounds, 2 blocks) drained her third 3-ball of the night on a long-range jumper - the a season-high ninth of the game for Miles - as the shot clock expired in the waning moments.
Porche' Hannah had 14 points, 7 rebounds, and five blocks while Chasity Moore added 10 points for Lane. Wynn had a game-high 16 points and Sutton added 10 for Miles, which plays at Lane on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
