JACKSON, Tenn. -- Miles has agonized through tough shooting nights on several occasions this season and been able to find a way to come out on top. On Saturday, though, the Lady Bears could not find the answer.Â
Lane scored the first 10 points of the game and never trailed while Miles shot 30 percent from the field in a 70-64 defeat at J.F. Lane Gym. The loss ended a five-game win streak for the Lady Bears (14-6, 9-3), who stayed in a tie with Tuskegee atop the SIAC Western Division standings with six games remaining. For the Dragons (7-13, 6-7), it is a bounce back win after losing to Miles by 19 points on Monday night.
Despite falling in the big hole, Miles battled back. A
Najla Shamsid-Deen basket with 7:34 to go tied the game at 48 and the Lady Bears looked poised to steal a road win in one of the toughest venues in the SIAC. But the Lady Bears, who missed 13 of their 15 field goal attempts in the first quarter, went cold down the stretch. They would miss 7-of-8 shots from the floor over the final four minutes and could not take advantage of some porous free throw shooting by the Dragons, who missed 14-of-20 from the line over the same period.
The end of the game looked much like the beginning for the Lady Bears. They missed their first seven shots from the field - plus two free throws - and turned the ball over five times as Lane built a 10-0 advantage.
Kierra Patrick (8 points, 4 rebounds) split a pair of free throws with 4:11 left in the first quarter to get Miles on the board and
Raiana Johnson's offensive rebound and putback as part of a three-point play was the first field goal with 2:49 to go in the period.
Miles trailed 15-11 at the end of the first quarter and ultimately fell behind by 10 points midway through the second before an
Amya Bryant basket with two minutes left in the first half knotted the game at 26. Still, the Lady Bears went into the half trailing 33-27. Miles would cut the deficit to a single point on three occasions in the third quarter, the last on a 3-pointer by Patrick with 1:23 to go. But Miles could never get over the hump and went into the fourth quarter trailing by two points. Any comeback attempts were also scuttled by tough shooting nights from top offensive playersÂ
Sakina Wynn (1-for-10, 8 points) and
Victoria Sutton (0-for-9, 6 points).Â
Four players scored in double figures for Lane, Led by Brianna Thompson (16 points), Alexis Harris (14), Cierra Brown (13), and Ra'Keta Shelton (10 points, 11 rebounds). Shamsid-Deen scored a team-high 10 points, Johnson had 8 points and 5 rebounds, and
Mya Millner added 5 points and a team-high 9 rebounds for Miles, which hosts Savannah State on Wednesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
