Seventh heaven

Good teams don't get comfortable with winning. They often look for challenges that force them to work towards achieving their next level of greatness.

For as much as Miles controlled much of its 67-57 win over Lane Monday night, it wasn't the kind of double-digit win that would make a team feel that it dominated. The Dragons pushed the first-place Golden Bears (15-3, 10-2 SIAC West), especially in the second half, before becoming the seventh consecutive team to come up short. Miles will have an opportunity to run its win streak to eight games in an immediate rematch at Lane (8-13, 4-9) on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Lane scored the first basket of the game but after 75 seconds, it never led again. In fact, over the final 37 minutes of the contest, Miles did not defend a Dragons possession where they could have tied the game. Still, the outcome was in doubt until the final minutes.

The Golden Bears did the heavy lifting at the start. After giving up the opening basket, Miles scored 13 consecutive points to take the lead for good. Richard Feagin (11 points, 4 assists) was the catalyst on offense, scoring seven points during the run. On the defensive side, an inspired Joel Logan (9 points, season-high 9 rebounds) blocked three shots, grabbed two rebounds and added an emphatic two-hand dunk that thrilled a Knox-Windam Gymnasium crowd that was filled with several of his loved ones who saw him play against his younger brother, Lane forward Joseph Logan. Unfortunately for Joseph, he was the victim of one of Joel's blocked shots.

After opening the 11-point advantage, Miles was able to keep the lead in double digits for most of the remainder of the first half. But it only got higher than that once, on a Feagin layup with three minutes left, that gave the Golden Bears a 31-18 lead. Lane would get as close as six points but would still trail 33-25 going into the break.

The second half looked much like the first. Miles would open a double-digit lead and Lane would fight right back. Dragons forward Ray White was doing damage in the post, scoing all 10 of his points in the second half. He had consecutive buckets early to cut the deficit to 37-33. But five minutes later, the Golden Bears were back in front by 11 after a Ryan Calhoun jumper made it 48-37 with 11:40 left. On two other occasions, Lane would cut the deficit to four points - the last time coming with 1:45 remaining. But Miles would wrap four free throws around a 3-pointer by Frank Royles (7 points) to put the final nail in the Dragons' coffin.

Tyler Henry scored 18 points and Daniel Hill added 9 points to pace Lane. Miles got solid performances from Jelani Watson-Gayle, who scored a game-high 19 points, Avery Brown (15 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds), and Braeden Stewart (4 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists).
