JACKSON, Tenn. -- When a team is hot, it can win even when it's cold.
Miles proved just that on Saturday afternoon in a 47-41 win over Lane at J.F. Lane Gym. The Golden Bears (16-3, 11-2 SIAC West) won their eighth straight game despite producing a season-low in points. The previous low this season was 62 points in a loss to Albany State.
To show how abnormal it is for Miles to win a game scoring this few points, consider this:Â it has been more than 11 years since the Golden Bears won a game scoring 47 points or less, defeating Paine 46-45 in January 2009. On the other side, Lane (7-11, 3-8) had never scored so few points under ninth-year head coach Bryanth Basemore, submarining the 46 points scored in a loss to Benedict in 2013. The last time the Dragons scored fewer than 41 points came in a 44-40 loss to Fort Valley State in 2011.
What was not a surprise is how well Miles defended the Dragons. Lane is the fifth team to score less than 50 points against the Golden Bears this season and the third team to score less than 20 in a half, joining Carver (17, first half) and Morehouse (19, first half). The Dragons shot just 21 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes but Miles wasn't much better, shooting just under 30 percent, as the game went to halftime tied at 17.
The second half was a veritable explosion compared to the first but neither team could find much separation from the other. Miles would lead by as many as four points on a couple of occasions, the last coming on a
Frank Royles bucket at the 12:19 mark that gave Miles a 27-23 lead. But when Ray White split two free throws with 8:16 remaining, Lane had grabbed the lead, 32-31. When D'Angelo Brown scored with 4:51 left, the Dragons led 41-38 and were positioned to pull of the upset.
But Miles apparently decided that Lane had scored enough points.
The Golden Bears would shut out the Dragons for the remainder of the game. Lane would miss all four of its attempts from the field and the free throw line while turning the ball over six times. Meanwhile, the offense finally got in gear for Miles, scoring eight points in 75 seconds to take control of the game.
Umar Frost's 3-point play tied the game and
Richard Feagin (6 points, 8 rebounds) drained a 3-pointer with 3:33 left to give Miles the lead for good.
Jelani Watson-Gayle would score with 2:46 remaining to close the spurt and put the Golden Bears on top, 46-41.
White scored 11 points and Ariston Johnson added 7 points to lead Lane.
Avery Brown had 10 points and 5 assists while Watson-Gayle (9 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists) and Frost (9 points) paced Miles, which hosts Savannah State on Wednesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
