LeMoyne-Owen ends Golden Bears streak

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- During its record-setting win streak, Miles has been so dominant - winning by an average of 16 points - that there weren't many outcomes that were in doubt in the final moments.

But for the first time in nearly two months, the SIAC Western Division champion Golden Bears had possession of the ball as the time wound down and it wasn't to run out the clock. Player of the Year candidate Avery Brown had to make a 3-pointer to send the game into overtime but he was unable to complete the task, giving LeMoyne-Owen a 65-62 win over No. 19 Miles to snap the team's 13-game win streak in the regular season finale.

A slow start by the Golden Bears (21-4, 16-3) was met by some red-hot shooting by the Magicians (14-13, 8-11), particularly guards Devin and Jordan Booker. The brothers combined for 19 points - including five 3-pointers - to put Miles in a 21-8 hole nine minutes into the game. The Golden Bears would trail by as many as 14 points in the first half but after Umar Frost made two late free throws, the halftime deficit was just 32-28.

While LOC was able to open an eight-point advantage early in the second half, Miles was able to chip away and finally, with 11:27 left, Brown scored in the halfcourt to put the Golden Bears on top, 48-47. But the lead was short-loved as the Magicians went back in front on the next possession and Miles never led again.

LeMoyne-Owen would lead 65-58 when Jordan Booker nailed his fifth 3-pointer of the game with 3:06 remaining. But Brown and Jelani Watson-Gayle (8 points, 5 assists) would each score to cut the deficit to three points and give the Golden Bears an opportunity to extend the game. After Jordan Booker missed for the Magicians, Braeden Stewart grabbed the rebound and Miles called time out with six seconds left to set up the final play. After Stewart got the inbound pass, he handed off to Brown, who came off a screen and got a good look at the basket. But the hit the front and back of the rim before coming out, bringing an end to nearly two months of unblemished basketball.

Jordan Booker had a game-high 33 points and Devin Booker added 16 for LeMoyne-Owen. Stewart had 15 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals, Brown added 12 points and 7 rebounds, while Ryan Calhoun came off the bench to score 12 for Miles, which will wait for its opponent in the SIAC Tournament quarterfinals on Mar. 4. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
