When Miles last saw Tuskegee, it took an
Avery Brown basket at the horn to pull out a close road win. On Saturday afternoon, Brown still had plenty of buckets for the Golden Tigers. But the late-game theatrics were not necessary.
Playing in front of a raucous Senior Day crowd at Knox-Windham Gymnasium, the Golden Bears took off in the second half and rolled to a 72-53 win over Tuskegee. The victory was the 13th in a row for Miles (21-3, 16-2) - a new school record for most consecutive wins in a single season - and secured the SIAC Western Division crown for the second straight season. The Golden Tigers (16-9, 13-5) have now lost five straight against Miles and have not won at Knox-Windham since 2014.
Miles honored its three seniors -
Frank Royles,
Braeden Stewart and
Umar Frost - before their final home games but it was a group of juniors who dominated to contest for the Golden Bears. Brown,
Jelani Watson-Gayle, and
Ryan Calhoun combined for 59 points, 16 rebounds and 9 assists, and had it working from all points on the floor.
Tuskegee's only lead in the game was 3-2 and that advantage dissipated on the next Miles possession. But the Golden Bears - paced by Brown's 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting - were never able to pull away from the Golden Tigers, who never trailed by more than eight points and went into halftime trailing 33-28. But Watson-Gayle came out firing to start the second half, draining 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions to open a 39-28 lead.
The lead was still just nine points with 13 minutes left before Miles broke the game open. Calhoun drained a 3-pointer to put the lead into double digits for good, 50-38. On the next possession, Brown got out on the break and slammed home another bucket that sent the crowd into a tizzy. That was the beginning of a 13-1 run, punctuated with another 3-ball from Calhoun - who made four of them on the night - to open a 60-39 advantage with nine minutes remaining. With the defense bearing down on Tuskegee, leading scorer James Eads *who averages more than 19 points per game) could never get it going as he scored just six points,
The Golden Bears outside shooting opened up easy lanes to the basket and they took advantage. Royles (8 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists) and Calhoun both had layups that opened 22-point leads, the last giving Miles a 70-48 lead with 2:54 remaining. The way things were unfolding in the second half was apparently too much for Tuskegee head coach Bengy Taylor to stomach. He picked up two technical fouls inside the last six minutes of the game that sent him to the showers early as Miles closed out the game with its reserve unit on the floor.
Gregg Boyd had 18 points and Myles Thomas added 11 for Tuskegee. Watson-Gayle (22 points), Calhoun (career-highs with 19 points and 7 rebounds) and Brown (18 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists) caried the load for Miles, which travels to LeMoyne-Owen on Tuesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
