Miles fell to Talladega College in straight sets Monday night (25-18, 25-23, 25-22) at Knox-Windham Gymnasium and remained winless on the season.
Julia Whittaker (7 kills, 8 digs, 3 blocks), La' Promise Boone (15 assists, 6 kills), and
Tatiyana Thomas (8 digs, 5 blocks, 3 kills) were among the leaders in a well-rounded effort, but the Lady Bears (0-6) could not shut the door on the Tornadoes (7-3) despite having big leads in the final two sets.
After falling behind early and dropping the first set, Miles got off to a good start in the second set. A kill by
Briana Brown (4 kills, 4 blocks, 8 digs) gave the Lady Bears an 18-15 advantage but the Tornadoes would score seven straight points to take the lead. Miles would fight back to within 24-23 but a kill by Keundra Rembert gave the second set to Talladega.
The Lady Bears got off to a faster start in the final set. A service ace by
Maiya Northard gave Miles a 6-1 lead and later,
D'Nautica Johnson had three aces as part of a 6-0 run that pushed the advantage to 17-9. Miles would ultimately open a 21-14 lead and it looked as if there would be a fourth set.
But Talladega came roaring back. The Tornadoes would score eight consecutive points to take the lead and after Miles tied it at 22, they would score the final three points to end the match.
Miles is back in action on Saturday when it hosts LeMoyne-Owen. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
