Miles dropped both games of a doubleheader Wednesday to West Alabama at historic Rickwood Field. The Tigers earned a come-from-behind 6-4 win in the opener, then stymied the Golden Bears bats in the nightcap in an 8-2 victory. The losses pushed the Golden Bears (5-9) skid to four games.
In Game 1,
Brandon Conner hit his team-leading fourth home run in the second to tie the game at 1, then
Ryne Benson drove in another run to give Miles its first lead. Conner added another RBI in the third and
Roderick Ransom scored on a wild pitch in the fourth to stake Miles the Golden Bears to a 4-2 lead.
Pitcher
Matthew White, making his first start of the season, was holding the Tigers at bay through five innings. But he ran into trouble in the sixth. After getting the first two outs, he gave up two hits - the last being a RBI double to Ryan Hughes - that ended his afternoon.
Noah Ledbetter (0-2) came on in relief but he gave up a single and a 2-run triple to give UWA a 5-4 lead. Miles had a chance to get the runs back in the bottom of the frame, loading the bases with one out. But
Bryan Baker hit into a double play to end the inning. The Tigers would add an insurance run in the seventh but Miles had two runners on and one out in the inning with another chance to tie. But
Cody Hamilton and Conner could not convert, giving the win to the UWA.
In the second game, the Tigers jumped on starter
Peyton Godfrey (0-1) for four runs in the second and ultimately took a 7-0 lead after four innings. That would be too much to overcome as five UWA pitchers held the Golden Bears to two singles. Miles' only runs came in the fifth when Benson scored on a wild pitch and
Gage Humphries, who had one of the two hits, scored on a RBI groundout by
Will Cantey.
Miles is back in action on Saturday when they travel to play Paine in a doubleheader. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
