Game Recap: Softball |

Lady Bears drop series to Lane

The Miles softball team nearly took its weekend series against Lane but dropped a heartbreaker in the final game as the Dragons took the series two game to one. After dropping the series opener 12-4 on Friday, the Lady Bears came back to take the opener of Saturday's marathon doubleheader, 9-8 in 10 innings, before falling 17-13 in the nightcap.

In the first game, Lane opened a 4-0 lead in the second inning before Miles got on the board. Pitcher Zamiyah Williams drove in a run when she reached on an error that would plate Chynna Gross and Yasmin Cottingham. She would later score on a failed pickoff at third base to cut the deficit to 4-3. But the Lady Bears would get no closer as the Dragons scored in each of the final three innings to secure the win. Gross had three hits, Cottingham added a RBI and Nala Moore had two stolen bases.

The Saturday doubleheader took more than six hours to complete and saw both teams with chances to win each game late. Miles trailed 6-2 in the opener but scored five times in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead. A two-run single by Zakierra Webb tied the game and she scored on an error to give the Lady Bears a 7-6 lead. Lane would tie the game in the seventh and that is where the score remained until the 10th.

A two-out RBI double by Raven Shoulders gave Lane the lead in the top of the frame. But Kristie Looney would reach on an error in the bottom of the frame, steal second and third, then score on a single from Alexus Gonzalez to tie the game. It looked like the game was headed to the 11th but a two-out error by the Dragons allowed Gonzalez to score to give Miles a wild 9-8 win. After nearly three hours, the two teams still had another game to play and it was wilder than the first.

Both teams scored in each of the first three innings. But Miles put a 6-spot on the board in the bottom of the third to take an 11-6 lead. Lane would cut the deficit to 11-10 in the top of the sixth but the Lady Bears tacked on some insurance runs in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Looney singled, then stole second and third. Davis Watkins followed with a RBI triple and she scored on a single by Gonzalez. Miles led 13-10 and needed just three outs to secure the series.

But the Dragons would score seven times in the top of the seventh to retake the lead for the first time since the second inning. Miles went down in order in the bottom of the inning to give Lane the win and the series. When the dust settled in the final game, the two teams combined for 30 runs, 21 hits, 19 errors and 15 walks in a contest that took more than two and a half hours.

Miles is back in action next weekend when they host Kentucky State in a crucial SIAC Western Division three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for Friday at 1 p.m.
