Golden Bears split DH with Christian Brothers

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Miles nearly swept a doubleheader from Christian Brothers, taking the opener 5-1 before giving up two late runs in a 5-4 loss is the nightcap Saturday at Nadicksbernd Field. Jacob Schuster pitched a complete game to get the victory in the first game while Dalton Roberts had four hits over the two games for the Golden Bears (3-2).

GAME 1 - Miles 5, Christian Brothers 1

Schuster (2-0) was dynamite, allowing just three hits and an unearned run while striking out seven. Miles gave him plenty to work with in the first inning as Jacob Bisharat, Roberts and Cody Hamilton each drove in runs to hand the Golden Bears a 3-0 lead. A sacrifice fly by Destin Davidson in the fourth and a run-scoring single by Bisharat in the seventh pushed the advantage to 5-0. Roberts, Bisharat and Brandon Conner each had two hits as Miles finished with 10 hits on the game.

The Buccaneers had scoring chances in the first two innings but Schuster was able to escape the jams, then got on a roll. He retired nine in a row and 14-of-15 - allowing just a walk in the fifth - as he entered the seventh looking for the shutout. CBU got its only run on a two-out wild pitch that scored J.D. Godspeed.

GAME 2 - Christian Brothers 5, Miles 4

The Bucs got single runs in the sixth and seventh to avert a sweep and earn their first win of the season. Miles led 4-3 going into the bottom of the sixth when Keagan Voss singled off Andrew Datcher with two outs to tie the game. The golden bears went down in order in the seventh and Ryne Benson came on in relief. A single, hit by pitch and sacrifice fly put runners on second and third with one out. An intentional walk loaded the bases before a sacrifice fly by Kyle Hindman scored Jeff Goodwin for the winner.

Miles got all of its runs in the third. Trailing 1-0, Roderick Ransom drove in his third run of the season with a single and Conner added his fourth RBI to give the Golden Bears the lead. They both came around to score on two 2-out errors on the same play that made the score 4-1. CBU would score twice off Datcher (6 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 2 K) in the bottom of the third to set up the finish.

UP NEXT: Miles hosts Montevallo on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
