FRANKFORT, Ky. -- A look at most of the final numbers could have led one to believe that Miles came up short against Kentucky State Saturday afternoon.
But the Lady Bears led for most of the second half and controlled the fourth quarter to have the most important final number, a 63-55 win over the Thorobreds at Exum Center. Miles (16-8, 9-7 SIAC) scored 25 points off turnovers and 26 points from the free throw line to put away the KSU (13-12, 6-10) and split the season series.
The Thorobreds led by three midway through the second quarter before the Lady Bears scored eight straight points and went to the locker room with a 20-17 advantage.
Raiana Johnson scored two quick buckets to start the third quarter that opened a 26-19 lead. KSU would take a one-point lead late but
Sakina Wynn (12 points, eight rebounds) and
Mya Millner (seven points) would send Miles to the fourth quarter with a 36-33 lead.
Miles made just one 3-pointer against KSU and it came from
Amoni Walker with 4:47 to go. On the next possession, it was Walker (five points, five rebounds) feeding Johnson (13 points, six rebounds) on the break that gave the Lady Bears their biggest lead, 46-36. The Thorobreds would get as close as four points but Miles would make 14-of-18 free throws over the final three minutes to seal its fourth straight victory.Â
Brooke Wallace scored 12 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for KSU.
Taylor Terry had 10 points and six rebounds and
Jasmine Hollis added six points and seven rebounds for Miles, which plays at Central State Monday afternoon. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
