Thorobreds run past Golden Bears

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- For just the second time this season, Miles allowed a team to score more than 70 points as it fell to Kentucky State 72-58 Saturday afternoon at the Exum Center.

The Thorobreds (12-13, 10-7 SIAC West) joined LeMoyne-Owen as the only teams to break the 70-point barrier and shoot at least 50 percent against the Golden Bears (16-8, 13-4), who lead the nation in points allowed and defensive field goal percentage. Offensively, 12 of the 14 players that got on the floor scored but no one on the team scored in double figures. Jeffrey Dockett scored nine points to lead the team but the Golden Bears shot just under 38 percent from the field and trailed by as many as 24 points in the second half.

Miles is also tops in Division II in defensive 3-point field goal percentage but KSU had the stroke going, making 10-of-17 from behind the 3-point arc. Ditallion Battle was 5-of-8 from downtown and scored 22 points for the Thorobreds. The Golden Bears made just six as a team, with Miles Meredith and Jelani Watson-Gayle making two each.

Kevin Hayes scored a game-high 23 points and David Jelks had eight points and 10 rebounds for KSU. Jose Roman-Angueria had seven points while Dominique Mitchell and Devonte Fuller each added six points for Miles, which plays its final regular season conference game Monday night at Central State. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
