MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Miles waged a spirited battle with Auburn Montgomery on Wednesday in a rematch of the Golden Bears' season opener a week ago. IN a game that had 19 lead changes, it was the Warhawks who had the final say, holding off Miles 66-64.
The Golden Bears (3-1) trailed for all but one possession in the first half. AUM (3-3) built a lead as large as nine points and shot 54 percent from the field as it went into the half with a 34-27 advantage.
But Miles wasted little time erasing the deficit.
Jelani Watson-Gayle (12 points) and
Frank RoylesĀ (10 points) drained 3-pointers as part of an 8-0 run to during the first two minutes of the second half to give the Golden Bears their first lead, 35-34. From there, neither team led by more than three points the rest of the way. An
Avery Brown jumper with 1:15 left tied the game at 63 but Jeremiah Bozeman made 3-of-4 free throws to give AUM a 66-63.
A subsequent foul by Bozeman sent Brown to the free throw line but he split a pair with 22 seconds left. But Miles would force a turnover and get the ball back. Royles had a chance to tie the game with six seconds left but he was unable to convert, giving AUM the season-series split.
Carlos Bell had 15 points and Maharrith Jackson added 14 points and 12 rebounds to lead AUM.
Avery Brown had 15 points and 4 steals and
Richard Feagin added 13 points for Miles, which plays next at Oakwood on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
