MONTEVALLO, Ala. -- Miles got downright defensive in the second half as it defeated Montevallo 70-60 Saturday night to open its season 2-0.
Jelani Watson-Gayle nailed five 3-pointers for the second consecutive game in scoring a game-high 20 points and
Avery Brown added 19 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals off the bench. But it was the defense that played a big part in the win as Miles allowed the Falcons (2-2) just five second-half baskets, with three of those coming in the final 80 seconds of the game.
Miles trailed 36-30 at the half as Montevallo shot 58 percent from the field. But the Golden Bears took the lead for good on a 3-pointer by
Frank Royles (10 points) less than six minutes into the second half. That was part of an 18-1 run over an eight-minute stretch that helped the Golden Bears open a 50-39 lead with 10:31 left. The lead would swell to 15 points on a couple of occasions in the second half and Montevallo would never get closer than seven points the rest of the way.
Jonas Parker had 16 points and Wade Loman added 15 to lead Montevallo.
Braeden Stewart had 10 points and a game-high 9 rebounds and
Richard Feagin added 10 points for Miles, which hosts Oakwood on Monday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
