There wasn't much shock to Miles beating Carver College Friday night in its opening game of the 2019 Lady Bears Tip-Off Classic at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. The Cougars had just five healthy players and Miles liberally substituted throughout the contest to easily win the battle of attrition.
But the Cougars made it a bit more of a game early, even holding a three-point midway through the second quarter. Still, they didn't have the manpower to handle the Lady Bears for most of the contest.
Sakina Wynn had 21 points and 10 rebounds and 13 different players scored for Miles to push its record to 2-0.
Miles led 17-11 at the end of the first quarter but Carver played as if it had something to prove. Imani Hightower drained a 3-pointer to tie the game at 18 and Kywneshia Spence (9 points, 11 rebounds) followed with another for a 21-18 advantage with just under six minutes left in the first half. But the Cougars made just one basket the rest of the quarter and the Lady Bears led 30-27 at halftime.
It was still a two-point game more than two minutes into the third quarter when Miles finally put the game out of reach. The Lady Bears would score 15 consecutive points, with Wynn scoring nine of those points during that run, to open a 48-31 advantage. To compound issues for the Cougars, Jaleesa Dillard fouled out with 1:33 left in the third quarter, which forced them to play the rest of the game with just four players. Miles would take full advantage, opening a lead as large as 30 points in the fourth quarter against the worn down Carver squad.
Hightower had 17 points, 7 rebounds and 5 steals while Alaysia Fowlkes added 13 points for the Cougars.
Charlisa Wellington had 10 points, 7, rebounds and 3 steals while
Jaylen Snipes and
Kahyanne Bolton each had eight points for Miles, which concludes the 2019 Lady Bears Tip-Off Classic Saturday against Oakwood. Tip time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
