Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Miles stays perfect in conference play

Miles scored the first nine points of the game, led by as many as 17 points, dominated the glass and had four players score in double figures as the Golden Bears downed Paine 71-64 Saturday afternoon at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. The win kept Miles (8-4, 5-0 SIAC West) as the only remaining undefeated team in conference play and surpassed last season's win total in just 12 games.

The Golden Bears never trailed but the Lions (3-10, 2-4 SIAC East), after falling behind by 10 points less than four minutes into the game, continued to battle. Two Jelani Watson-Gayle (13 points) free throws gave Miles a 15-point advantage with 4:18 left in the first half but Paine closed the period with a 10-0 run and went into the half down 36-31.

The Lions closed to within three points at the start in the second half but Miles blew the game open moments later. Two baskets each from Rashawn Chapman (six points, eight rebounds, two blocks), Jose Roman-Angueria (10 points) and Devonte Fuller (16 points, eight rebounds) guided a 12-0 run that gave the Golden Bears a 54-37 lead with 13:05 left. While Paine was able to pull within six points late, Miles was never in danger of dropping this contest. It held the Lions to less than 40 percent shooting from the field and held a 50-30 edge in rebounds.

Cameron Gaines and Charles Moore each had 19 points to lead Paine. Nathan Sheffield (13 points, seven rebounds) and Jeffrey Dockett (eight points, four assists, three steals) played well for Miles, which hosts Benedict on Monday. Tip time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
