Lady Bears suffer OT loss to Spring Hill

Miles erased a 14-point deficit against Spring Hill in the fourth quarter to force overtime but was never able to grab the lead in the extra period, falling 71-68 Monday night at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. Taylor Terry (22 points, 14 rebounds, two blocks) had a monster effort for the Lady Bears (10-7, 5-6), who have now lost five straight against the Badgers (9-10, 5-5).

In overtime, the two teams traded scores throughout the first four minutes. Each time the Badgers got on the board, the Lady Bears answered. A jumper by Najla Shamsid-Deen off a feed from Amoni Walker (seven points, three rebounds) tied the game at 68 with 1:29 left. But Deja Walker (14 points, six rebounds) scored as she was fouled on an offensive putback with 17 seconds left to give Spring Hill the lead for good. She missed the free throw but Darika Chelsey missed a 3-pointer on the other end for a chance to get the win. After Walker split a pair fo free throws, Waynenecka Wynn's (five points) desperation shot from three-quarters court was off the mark, sending the Lady Bears to a fifth straight conference loss.

After a dismal third quarter that ended with Spring Hill holding a 50-38 advantage, Miles seemed as if it did not have enough answers to overcome the double digit hole. Two Tiffany Valentine (15 points, seven rebounds) free throws to open the fourth gave the Badgers their biggest lead, 52-38. The deficit was still at 12 points with 6:33 to go in regulation before the Lady Bears came alive.

Using full court pressure defense to force turnovers and ratchet up the tempo, the Lady Bears scored 11 straight points over the next three minutes to cut the deficit to a single point. A Mya Millner (five points, four rebounds) basket with 1:59 left in the fourth gave Miles its first lead of the game, 59-58. Spring Hill had retaken a 1-point lead when Jasmine Hollis (nine points, 10 rebounds, two steals) was fouled with five seconds left. Hollis made the first but missed the second and when Mathilde Nicolas missed her 3-point heave at the buzzer, the game was headed to overtime tied at 62.

Kate Krout scored 22 points and grabbed 15 points to pace Spring Hill. Shamsid-Deen had 12 points, four assists and four steals for Miles, which plays at Oakwood on Thursday. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
