Lady Bears demolish Oakwood

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- A game that was relatively close into the third quarter turned into a laugher as Miles scored 29 consecutive points during the second half to run away with a 74-43 win over Oakwood Thursday night at Ashby Auditorium.

Sakina Wynn came off the bench to score 20 points and finished with nine of the Lady Bears' 32 steals. Taylor Terry also had a big night for Miles (11-7) with 18 points, six rebounds and six steals. Oakwood never lead during the game but kept it interesting thanks to a 21-point, 14-rebound effort from DJ Jackson.

Miles led 28-23 at the half but could not get it going at the start of the third quarter. The Ambassadors trailed by only five points with four minutes left in the period before the Lady Bears took off. A 3-pointer from Symone Williams gave Miles a 40-30 lead with three minutes left in the third - the team's first double-digit lead of the contest. Oakwood would knock down six consecutive free throws to get the deficit back to single digits but two Jasmine Hollis (eight points, three rebounds) free throws send the Lady Bears into the fourth quarter with a 45-36 advantage.

Those free throws from Hollis, though, started the avalanche and the Ambassadors were completely snowed under by the time Miles was through. The Lady Bears scored the first 27 points of the fourth quarter, with Wynn (13) and Terry (8) scoring the first 21 by themselves. Amya Bryant scored on a fastbreak layup with 2:16 to go that gave Miles a 72-36 lead before Jackson's bucket on the other end halted the run. Still, Miles forced 17 turnovers (15 steals, including six by Bryant and four by Wynn) and held Oakwood to 3-of-11 shooting in the final period to win going away.

Amoni Walker had three points, six rebounds, five assists and five steals and Raiana Johnson added eight points and six rebounds for Miles, which hosts LeMoyne-Owen on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
