Second half struggles lead to second straight loss



MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- LeMoyne-Owen used two big runs during a red-hot second half to defeat Miles 72-64 Monday night at Johnson Hall. Jeffrey Dockett had 19 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals off the bench for Miles (11-6, 8-2 SIAC West), which suffered back-to-back losses for the first time since the opening two games of the season.

The Magicians (13-7, 8-4) shot a blistering 65 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes against the No. 1 defensive team in the nation. Miles led 31-27 at halftime but LOC used a 15-2 run early in the second half to take the lead for good. After falling behind by 10 points, the Golden Bears went on their own tear, scoring 10 of the next 11 points to get right back into the game.

But LOC the followed with a 10-0 run midway through the period when the Golden Bears pulled close. Miles would miss seven consecutive shots as the Magicians opened an 11 point advantage making 7-of-8 shots from the field. Miles would get as close as 63-59 with 3:33 remaining but the Magicians would finish the job, scoring 45 points in the second half - the most by any opponent in any half this season.

Tyrone Banks had a game-high 26 points and Jerry Hurt added 18 points for LeMoyne-Owen. Devontae Fuller had 12 points and five rebounds while Rashawn Chapman added 10 points and nine rebounds for Miles, which travels to Tuskegee on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
