JACKSON, Tenn. -- Miles was able to recover from an early double-digit deficit but a late run by Lane was too much to overcome as the Golden Bears fell 68-60 Saturday evening at J.F. Lane Gymnasium. The loss breaks a four-game win streak for Miles (11-5, 8-1 SIAC), which suffers its first conference defeat of the season.
The Dragons (9-7, 6-4) used an 18-5 run over a nine-minute stretch in the first half to put the Golden Bears in a 24-12 hole with 7:50 left before halftime. During the stretch, Miles went 2-of-7 from the field and turned the ball over five times while Lane shot 60 percent (6-of-10) against the nation's No. 1 defense. The Golden Bears would trail by as many as 13 points but went into the half down 33-24.
Miles quickly found itself behind by double digits to start the second half but was finally able to get things together on both ends of the floor. Inspired play from
Devonte Fuller and
Jose Roman-Angueria helped whittle the Dragons lead and when Fuller drained a 3-pointer with 8:57 to go, the Golden Bears had taken a 48-47 lead.
But the lead lasted all of 90 seconds. Paced by two Terrace Holt 3-pointers, Lane scored 10 consecutive points to retake the lead for good. Miles responded with five straight points, getting to within 57-54 with 3:41 remaining. But the Dragons were near flawless at the charity stripe coming down the stretch, making 11-of-12 free throws over the final 2:25, part of 20-for-22 effort from the line for the game. Lane became just the fifth team this season to shoot over 40 percent from the floor against Miles and their point total was the most scored against the Golden Bears this season.
Holt (21 points), Daniel Hill (12), and Kendarius Ash (11) all scored in double figures for Lane. Fuller (20 points, four rebounds) and Roman-Angueria (14 points, three rebounds) were the top performers for Miles, which plays at LeMoyne-Owen on Monday night. Tip time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
