Kentucky State started the game with an 11-2 run and Miles was unable to recover, falling 57-42 Monday night at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. The loss was the second in the last three contests for the Lady Bears (9-3, 5-2 SIAC West), who scored their fewest points in a game all season against the Thorobreds (9-8, 3-6).
Miles shot less than 27 percent from the field in the first quarter and that turned out to be its best shooting quarter of the game. Overall, the Lady Bears made less than 23 percent of its attempts and really struggled from beyond the 3-point stripe (3-of-19, 16 percent). But even with all the shooting woes, and falling behind by as many as 12 points in the second quarter, the Lady Bears trailed just 24-20 at the half.
The cold shooting continued into the third quarter as Miles did not make its first basket until
Sakina Wynn drained a 3-pointer with 4:26 left in the period. Still the Lady Bears were in striking distance, getting as close as three points and entered the fourth quarter down 38-33. But Miles was never able to get over the hump in the final period and ultimately fell behind as many as 16 points as KSU ran away late from the free throw line.
Brooke Wallace had 14 points and 15 rebounds and Erica Jones added 13 points to lead the Thorobreds. Wynnhad a game-high 16 points along with four rebounds, three steals and two blocks while
Najla Shamsid-Deen added eight points and six steals for Miles, which plays Saturday at Lane. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
