After a slow start, Miles came back to dominate Central State in a 67-48 win Saturday afternoon at Knox-Windham Gymnasium.
Jeffrey Dockett (14 points, seven assists and five steals) and
Nathan Sheffield (13 points, six rebounds) came off the bench to spark the Golden Bears (10-4, 7-0 SIAC West), who remain on top of the Western Division standings.
Central State came out smoking, opening a 19-7 lead less than nine minutes into the game. But a
Miles Meredith dunk, followed by a Sheffield 3-pointer had the game tied at 23 with 4:44 left in the first half. The Golden Bears would use an 8-0 run to finish the first half and went into the locker room with a 31-27 lead.
The Marauders tied the game at 36 after a 3-point play by Tom Johnson. But Sheffield and
Jelani Watson-Gayle hit consecutive 3-pointers to give Miles the lead for good. A 17-1 run by the Golden Bears put the game away for good. Dockett had a couple of steals that led to fastbreak baskets during the decisive run, Overall, Miles forced 17 turnovers which led to 16 points.
Dreon Lewis scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Central State.
Devonte Fuller had 12 points and six rebounds and Watson-Gayle added eight points and six rebounds for Miles, which hosts Kentucky State on Monday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
