WILBERFORCE, Ohio -- Miles showed flashes of its potential but ultimately struggled during the five matches it played at the first Western Division Cluster, played at Central State this weekend.
The Lady Bears dropped four of their five matches, earning a win against the host Lady Marauders but being swept in three other matches in the opening of Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.
Raiana Johnson had a team-highs in kills (28), hitting percentage (.214 ) and blocks (14) for Miles while
Tatiyana Thomas topped in assists (62) and
D'Nautica Johnson led in digs (47).
LeMoyne-Owen 3, Miles 0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-20)
The Lady Bears fell into big holes in each set as the Magicians swept the match.
Briana Brown had a team high nine kills, Thomas added a double-double (22 assists, 10 digs),
D'Nautica Johnson had a team-high 12 digs while
Raiana Johnson hit .364 with five kills and five blocks.
Miles 3, Central State 0 (19-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-17)
After dropping the first set, the Lady Bears controlled the remainder of the match, winning each set comfortably.
Raiana Johnson was dominant, hitting .600 with 13 kills.
Briana Brown had eight kills and three aces,
D'Nautica Johnson had a team-high 11 digs,
Tatiyana Thomas (12 assists) was one of nine different players with assists.
Spring Hill 3, Miles 0 (25-8, 25-13, 25-7)
The Badgers thoroughly dominated the Lady Bears, outhitting Miles .371 to -.073 in sweeping the match.
Breanna Edwards-Demars (5-3-15, .133) and
Maiya Northard (3-2-6, .167) were the only players to finish wih a positive hitting percentage for Miles, which has never beaten Spring Hill.
Kentucky State 3, Miles 1 25-22, 20-25, 25-10, 25-17)
Miles split the first two sets but faded down the stretch to give the Thorobrettes the four-set win. Thomas had a double-double (17 assists, 12 digs), Brown had a team-high six kills and nine digs and
Raiana Johnson had four kills and six blocks (two solo).
Lane 3, Miles 0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-19)
The Dragons never trailed in the opening set, then held off any comeback attempts from the Lady Bears over the final two sets to sweep the match. Brown had three kills, three aces and six digs,
Raiana Johnson had five kills and a block,
Laura Anne Hughes had a team-high eight assists, and
D'Nautica Johnson had 10 digs and an ace.
